Invested in Community: Buddy Up for Men’s Suicide Prevention

Through Viewpoint Foundation’s mental health initiative, we have helped bring the Buddy Up campaign from the Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP) to life. Buddy Up is a men’s suicide prevention campaign: a call to action for men, by men, to help a buddy. Buddy Up teaches men how to help if they see a friend who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide in four simple steps:

  1. Pay attention to signs that your buddy is struggling.
  2. Start a conversation with them.
  3. Keep it going by asking them questions and listening.
  4. Stick to your role – connect your buddy to help and check-in to show support.
In Canada, the suicide rate for men is three times higher than women. Society portrays masculinity as an individual who is stoic and self-reliant and teaches that showing emotion is a sign of weakness – as is asking for help. The goal of the Buddy Up campaign is to change this reality and to change the narrative of asking for help.

This campaign needs Champions like you to help spread the word that men’s suicide is preventable.

June 2021 is Buddy Up Month!
